Tool belt theory
Assignment #5
Humans are naturally tool users. We use a wide variety of tools on a daily basis. We also create new tools and use tools for uses other than what they we designed for everyday. Tools help us to adapt and succeed. Whether we want to catch a fish, change a tire, eat food, or learn and express ourselves, we use tools!
When it comes to education, tools really do help "level the playing field" for many struggling learners. There are tools to help us see better, hear better, tools that read written text and there are also tools that help us express ourselves (written output/artistic expression). The possibilities are truly endless!
Children and adults alike learn to use and depend on a repertoire of tools. For the purpose of learning and expressing oneself in a school environment, the following resources are particularly useful. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, as there is a plethora of learning tools available (ranging from purchased and downloadable software to free online assistive tools). The following resources were chosen by me for a child with significant learning disabilities and physical impairments. These tools are useful for a wide range of people regardless of needs, abilities and age.

Panther Math PaperPanther Math Paper is a useful App which helps students with written output impairments. Now students can do math without a pencil! This App costs 19.99 and is for use on an iPad. I found this App very useful for my student. He has fine motor skill difficulties and holding a pencil, especially for long periods is hard for him, and as a result his work is often quite messy and hard to read. He is supplied an iPad for school use, so this App definitely was the most practical to support his needs. |
